5/12/08- Not exactly what I had planned on for the first story on this page, but this is something that will be affecting everyone.  I am speaking of the fires throughout the area especially those in South Palm Bay and Malabar.  I was out at one of the new fires this evening just off of Jupiter in Southwest Palm Bay and was able to see first hand how out of control this has become.  That fire was suspected of being started by someone and it cut a 200 yard wide swath of destruction through the neighborhood helped by very dry conditions and gusty winds.  I was actually on my way to shoot some Little League and saw that the game was cancelled when I decided to head down to see what I could shoot (Old photojournalism habits die hard).  I had been planning on working my way through the police barricades down to the Bayside area when I saw the fires off of Jupiter.  I was able to get into the area and set off on foot to see the extent of the damage.  The first house I came across that was surrounded by fire was on San Antonio St SW.  There was a gentleman in the back of the house grabbing buckets of water from his aboveground pool and dumping them onto his smoldering back porch.  I grabbed a bucket and helped him get most of it out before I snapped a few quick photos and told him that I had to move on.  There were three houses around his that were in the final stages of collapse from fire damage.  That was very close to where this particular fire started.  I moved across a couple of streets navigating through burning lots and came across a County fire truck on Troy Rd SW with several firefighters guarding one house from the flaming remnants of its neighbor.  Matt St. Pierre of the Palm Bay Fire Department kept a steady stream of water spraying along the side of the house which already had many pieces of  vinyl siding melting down the sides just from the heat of the fire next door.  I looked over my shoulder to see another dark gray cloud of smoke billowing up and walked through a few more lots over to Treemont Ave SW to see a house starting to go up in flames.  There were two vans and a car already on fire and a pumper truck from Palm Bay Station 92 was there as well.  The firefighters on the scene told me that because the house was already past saving and the surrounding area was mostly burnt out brush that they had to move on to other areas where homes were threatened.   That scene was played out again and again as truck after truck would drive up and down the roads looking for structures that were under direct threat from a fire.  This did nothing to calm the panicked homeowners who had flames from smaller fires coming closer to their homes.  This goes to show you just how severe the situation has become.  Under any other circumstance there would have been no hesitation on the part of the firefighters to stop and put out every little flame they saw, but there was absolutely no way for them to keep up with the areas under siege from the fires.  Also remember that I was not even in the worst areas hit by the fires so far.  That is little comfort for those that lost their homes in this latest fire.  I would also like to point out the fact that several residents along Saragassa Ave SW set up coolers filled with bottled water for firefighters that stopped at a nearby fire hydrant to refill their trucks.  I know everyone's prayers go out to the people being affected by the fires all over the area as well as the many firefighters and law enforcement personnel involved.
