Grub Gab

This page will feature a local eatery each month as well as the occasional not-so-local
surprise stop. Your not so world renowned, but well traveled family dining experts are;
Amber- 4 1/2 years old and self proclaimed queen of the almighty chicken nugget.
Ethan- 8 years old and known to dabble in the unexpected (and sometimes edible).
Mom- age unknown and forever unwilling to pass up a fresh bowl of chips & salsa.
Dad- at least 5 years old in dog years and always in search of the next great food!
Actually both Mom and Dad have plenty of experience when it comes to sampling the finer and many times less than fine appetizers, salads, entrees, and of course desserts from countless establishments throughout the area. We will visit only family friendly locations (maybe once in awhile we will get away from the kiddies to visit an eatery for the grown up visitors of the site). Each month as the Grubby Foursome make their stop, we will each let you know what their dining experience was like. These reviews will not offer our opinions of the food (unless they were really good or something that might need to be avoided entirely), but will give a general description of what can be expected at each location. We are providing this service to be informative and not to persuade you to go or not go to any location we review based on our visits.
4/20/08- We took the kids to one of our favorite places to eat today. Uno Chicago Grill in Viera has been a longtime favorite for mom and I since we lived in Orlando while attending UCF. Usually we will grab something to go instead of dining inside, but today we decided to stop in for a visit. Mom and I opted for the BBQ Chicken Thin Crust Pizza and we didn't leave a crumb as the pizza was excellent as always. Ethan liked the idea of making his own pizza and our waiter Josh brought him out the crust, a bowl of tomato sauce, some cheese, as well as a few slices of pepperoni. While watching her big brother make his pizza, Amber decided that she wanted to do the same thing (When the Chicken Nugget Queen decides on something other than nuggets we expect trouble, but we let this one slide). Both kids loved putting the toppings on their pizza and once the finished products were brought out Ethan quickly put a big dent in his. Of course The Chicken Nugget Queen then told us that pizza was yucky and only ate the crust off of hers (I had a piece and it was great). Not much else to say about Uno except that every time we have eaten there we have enjoyed the variety on the menu and we always leave with a full tummy. One thing I would like to say though is "Bring back the Shroom Pizza!!!"
3/22/08- This time we got a group together to cure Ethan's craving for frog legs that he missed out on last week. We took a ride up to Lone Cabbage Fish Camp located on SR520 just west of Cocoa. Be forewarned that most items on the menu are fried (works for us), but there are several choices such as burgers and grilled fish sandwiches that will keep you out of the fryer. We chose to eat outside on the deck overlooking the St. John's River and were able to duck under a covered area when it started to sprinkle. There were eleven of us in the group and between us we tried; frog legs, gator tail, fried catfish, a BBQ pork sandwich, a West Virginia Hot Dog (a hot dog covered in chili and coleslaw), frog legs, chicken tenders (yes they passed the Chicken Nugget Queen's taste test), more frog legs, hushpuppies, fries, and even more frog legs. There was something for everyone to drink as Lone Cabbage offers soft drinks (in cans), sweet and unsweet tea, bottled water, beer, and they also have a full bar. Everything brought out to us was great, but we sure did put a dent in someone's frog population. Our server Jenny had the food ready for us when everyone got back from their airboat ride which was a plus for the young kids that were ready to eat right away. Everyone in the group had an excellent time eating and for a review of the airboat ride visit our What to do in Florida Page. Stop by Lone Cabbage Fish Camp next time you are in the area, you won't be disappointed.

3/15/08- The first stop on the Grub Gab's never ending feast was at the Osceola Sportsman's Association Family Campout in Kenansville on March 14th. The Campout includes a wild game dinner that this year included; fried gator tail, fried catfish, fried mountain lion, smoked wild hog, and smoked venison wrapped in bacon. Obviously not the fare for the vegetarian or die hard health conscious (of which I am neither). Visit our What to do in Florida Page for a full review of the Campout, Dinner, and Sportsman Show.
Our next stop on the Grub Gab Trail will be from Conch Key on U.S.1 near Suntree.
